GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Packers and 49ers playoff game at Lambeau Field is going to make Green Bay a popular and busy place this weekend. That’s being made apparent by the current flight schedules coming in to Austin Straubel International Airport.
“We’re expecting full flights for the whole weekend. So anybody that’s looking to get to Green Bay for the game, if they haven’t made their plans already, they should do it as quickly as possible,” said Airport Director Marty Piette. “Flights for Sunday and Monday are already full. Coming in Friday is looking pretty full, and Thursday there’s a little bit of availability…Book it now as quickly as you can to make sure you can find a spot.”
People tend to filter into town in the days leading up to the game, but the day after the game typically sees the mass exodus of people trying to find their way home. Piette says either way, airlines are keeping a close eye on the situation.
“We reached out to all the airlines. What they’ll do is watch the bookings, and as bookings come in, should there warrant a need for additional flights or larger aircraft. they are gonna do their best to try to do that,” Piette told WTAQ News. “We are running into some challenges just with the latest variation of COVID and crew issues right now. That is a challenge for them, which is why I say to book early.”
There is also heavy general aviation around the airport in the days surrounding the game as privately owned aircraft and corporate aircraft also come in. Piette says it’s not unusual to see well over 100 aircraft parked on the property.
