How to clean Apple polishing cloth

Apple provides specific instructions on how to clean its products, ranging from computers and tablets to smartphones and accessories. But if there’s one Apple product that more than deserves such instructions, it’s the company’s own $19 polishing cloth.

So to help you get the most mileage from the $19 polishing cloth, follow the specific instructions straight from a support document published on the Apple website:

  1. Hand wash the polishing cloth with dish soap and water
  2. Rinse thoroughly
  3. Allow the polishing cloth to air dry for at least 24 hours

You should not use any other cloth to clean the nano-texture glass, Apple adds.

The polishing cloth removes dust or regular smudges from the nano-texture glass screen. “For infrequent cleaning of hard-to-remove smudges, you can moisten the cloth with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution,” the company cautions.

Why is Apple selling its own polishing cloth?

Launched on October 18, 2021, the product is more than your typical cleaning rag to wipe shiny surfaces clean. Priced at $19 a pop and made with soft, non-abrasive material, it was designed to clean any Apple display, including the sensitive nano-texture glass of the Pro Display XDR, safely and effectively.

A teardown performed by iFixit revealed two pieces of cloth glued together.

Although the internet had a field day ridiculing Apple for selling such an accessory, the product has turned into an unexpected hit, going in and out of stock following the launch. This is probably due to the fact that people who own a pricey Apple screen, like the company’s Pro Display XDR external monitor or 27-inch iMac, are aware of the need to use the right cleaning cloth that won’t damage the sensitive nano-texture glass.
