There’s a new raffle opportunity in town and it could put $5,000 in your bank account.

Volunteers for Literacy (VFL) kicked off the first annual Love for Literacy $5,000 Raffle in November and will hold the drawing to determine the winner on Feb. 14. Tickets are $20 each and with only 1,000 tickets printed, chances of winning are one in 1,000. A purchase of five tickets for $100 improves the chance of winning to one in 200.

VFL programs are geared around a goal of empowering people in the Habersham community through literacy so they can lead more productive and fulfilling lives. One of the most successful is The Dictionary Project in which VLF gives dictionaries to every third-grade student in Habersham County Schools. Purchase of one $20 ticket will provide eight bright yellow The Best Dictionary for Students. Purchase of five ticket provides 20 dictionaries.

VFL also is a major sponsor of the Scripps Spelling Bee and funds each school’s registration and trophies that go to each school winner and runner-up and the county champion and runner-up. A purchase of 15 tickets would pay for registration for one school and a trophy for the school winner.

“VFL operates several programs that have earned Habersham County the designation of Certified Literate Community,” said Dr. Don Gnecco, VFL board president. “This is possible only with support from United Way and the generosity of citizens and businesses who contribute to our annual fundraisers. We are so blessed.”

Proceeds from the raffle also will help fund VFL’s English Language Acquisition (ELA) program, GED scholarships and GED marketing, as well as upkeep on VFL’s 17 Little Free Libraries dotted around the county.

Tickets may be purchased from any VFL board member; in Clarkesville at A to Zinc Health Store and Smoothie Bar and Elizabeth & Company; by going to the VFL website www.vflhabersham.com or by scanning the QR code below.

Volunteers for Literacy is a proud United Way Agency.
