MCCOOK, Neb.-Authorities have identified a Cambridge man as the man who was shot by a Red Willow County deputy on Monday.

According to the Red Willow County Attorney's Office, Sheriff Alan Kotschwar and Chief Deputy Joe Koetter were in the area of Walmart in the 1900 block of West B. St., just before 11:00 p.m., investigating an individual who was threatening to harm himself.

Kotschwar and Koetter located a man, Scott Kutnink, 37, who was standing outside his vehicle. It was discovered that Kutnink was not the man threatening to harm himself.

At some point, authorities say Kutnink entered his vehicle and ran over Koetter. Koetter discharged his service weapon one time, striking Kutnink.

Kutnink's vehicle continued to drive through the parking lot before coming to a stop after running over an embankment.

Both Koetter and Kutnink were transported to Community Hospital in McCook.

Authorities say Kutnink's injuries are life-threatening and he was transported to a Kearney hospital where his is listed in critical condition.

Koetter was treated and released.

The Nebraska State Patrol will lead the investigation into incident.
