Coronation Street is reportedly lining-up a drink spiking storyline for Amy Barlow.

The soap character is set to be taken to hospital, with her parents believing that she had an overdose and that drug dealer Jacob Hay has been leading her astray, The Sun reports.

However, it's clear that Amy has been spiked after she insists that she didn't take drugs knowingly, though Steve and Tracy are still not convinced.

The soap's boss Iain MacLeod previously spoke to Digital Spy and other media about the Amy and Jacob storyline, and how their pairing impacts Steve and Tracy.

"We also really liked the idea of pairing Jacob up with somebody who is historically quite well behaved and wouldn't say boo to a goose. That's Amy Barlow!" he said.

"We thought: 'How would Tracy and Steve react to Amy suddenly ending up in a romantic relationship with possibly the most unsuitable boyfriend they've ever heard of?'

"Steve and Tracy try to strategise it, trying things like reverse psychology, freezing her out, cutting her off financially. All of these things just make things worse and worse, to comedy effects. In the end, they have to bite the bullet and try to get along with this lad."

He added: "Jacob is trying to redeem himself. We discover things about how he arrived into the drug gang which will reframe people's view of him and make you see him in a slightly different light. It's about him trying to put the past behind him and rehabilitate himself. He'll make amends where necessary to people like Leanne and Simon.

"Jacob did some heinous things, but he's mature enough to realise that he's got some amends to make. So it's a nice story about redemption that's got a nice romcom at the start of it. It's Meet the Parents done Coronation Street style."
