SAN ANTONIO - TxDOT and the City of San Antonio are preparing for winter weather that is expected to hit late tonight and into Thursday morning.
Anytime you have moisture combined with below freezing temperatures, it makes for a very dangerous situation on roadways, which is why TxDOT is getting on top of that right now.
Starting Wednesday morning, TXDOT has been treating highways, focusing on the Northeast Side of San Antonio, as they treat areas such as Loop 1604, Interstate 10 and Interstate 35. TXDOT tells us it will also be treating other areas which are known to freeze over which cause dangerous driving conditions.
Meanwhile, the City of San Antonio is also gearing up for the cold weather, such as flyovers and bridges.
The City’s Department of Human Services is working with nonprofit partners to prepare overnight shelter and meals of our homeless population. Human Services and nonprofits are also going into known homeless encampments to talk to the people there about the cold weather.
The city is prepared to open four warming centers to offer short-term emergency shelter if conditions warrant it. That would be a combination of freezing temperatures, precipitation, winds, and power outages that create dangerous inclement weather.
CPS Energy also told us last week, the utility is winterized is prepared for cold weather.
What we will likely experience this week is not forecasted to be as bad as what we saw with the historic winter storm back in February 2021.
