Mother and father now charged with murder after toddler's death

GREENVILLE, Pitt County —
The mother of a child who died earlier this month has now been charged with his murder and the child's father is facing additional charges.

Last week a grand jury indicted Tara Stancil, 34, and Danny Smith, 29, on first-degree murder and child abuse charges related to the death of their 3-year-old son, Bentley Smith.
Smith had previously been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the case.
On January 1 at about 7:40 pm, the Greenville Police Department was sent to a home Kennedy Circle where EMS was treating a toddler in cardiac arrest.
Bentley Smith was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing and officials said they are unable to release more information at this time.
