Authorities have released the name of a pedestrian struck and killed by a Birmingham police officer.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the fatality victim as Ricardo Morales Cuin. He was 19 and lived in Birmingham.

The crash happened about 11 p.m. Saturday on Tarrant Huffman Road and Airport Boulevard.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the officer was on patrol when Morales was hit while he was in the roadway. The officer immediately attempted to render aid and summoned medical assistance.

Morales was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:21 p.m. by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Mauldin said per department protocol, an internal investigation is being conducted by BPD’s Internal Affairs Division. He said that protocol applies for all occurrences of injury or death involving an officer.

“The Birmingham Police Department extends sincere condolence to the family of the victim in this tragic incident,’’ Mauldin said.
