TEL AVIV, ISRAEL (KMOX) - These are the companies hackers love to copy. IT Security firm, Checkpoint Software Technologies, says hackers use shipping, shopping, and social media companies to try to trick consumers into giving up personal information.
Called "phishing," scammers send out realistic emails that often link back to fake but legitimate-looking websites or emails that contain other malicious links. Like this:
In a new report, Check Point Research discovered that nearly a quarter of all phishing attempts worldwide spoofed shipping company DHL, many with emails saying a package was out for delivery.
Amazon, FedEx and PayPal were also in the top 10:
Check Point warns, a popular PayPal phishing scheme uses the brand's graphics and asks the email recipient to confirm their account information.
The company says consumers should always be cautious about giving away personal data and credentials through an email link -- even those that look just like the real thing.
