The latest internet trend does not require you to be good at TikTok dances or eat anything bizarre—you just have to like words.

If you have been seeing Wordle pop up as you go about your business online, you might think it’s some brand new thing. However, the game actually came out in 2013 and just recently experienced a surge in popularity.

There are no ads on the site, and the same word appears for everyone each day. Wordle started gaining popularity in recent months as celebrities began mentioning it online, and the functionality to share your results on social media was added.

It’s just a quick, simple game that anyone can learn quickly and chat with about friends. That’s likely why at last count 1.8 million people played it…compared to just 90 before it went viral.

The Wall Street Journal recently got readers up to speed about Wordle, but here are the key takeaways.

If you are interested in checking out Wordle, it is not an app or a social media game. Wordle keeps things old school and makes you go to its actual site to play, which you can find here.

The simple concept is likely what led to its sudden popularity. Each day a new five-letter word is generated, and you have six chances to guess what it is. If one of your letters turns gray, it is not in the word.

If it turns yellow, the letter is in the word, but you put it in the wrong spot. And if it turns green, it is the right letter and in the right spot.

Don’t worry if you couldn’t play Fortnite or Among Us to save your life. Wordle is a game for gamers of any skill level.
