LaMont Hamilton

He departed this life Jan. 12, 2022, knowing Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and certain of his place in heaven.

Born and raised in Goldsboro, N.C., he was educated in Wayne County schools. He graduated from Dillard High School, and attended North Carolina A&T State University and Spartan School of Aeronautical Science.

After stints as a pilot and a race car driver, LaMont served as a second-generation funeral director, licensed for more than 40 years, and was the owner/president of Hamilton Funeral Chapel, a funeral services firm that proudly served families for more than 80 years.

Following in his parents’ footsteps, LaMont was a tireless activist. Often working behind the scenes, he worked with politicians and business leaders to promote opportunities and equity in the community.

He was very involved in civic and professional organizations, and served on several boards, including Summerville Academy, Operation Care, First Citizens Bank and Wilson Medical Center Foundation.

He was a member of J.W. Hood Masonic Lodge and Mount Zion Original Free Will Baptist Church.

LaMont was a loving father of two children, George Bradley Atkinson, who preceded him in death, and LaMonique Hamilton.

He was the proud grandfather of Marshall Hamilton.

He also leaves one sister, Shirley Hamilton-Doctor (Johnny); one brother, Levi Hamilton Jr. (Grace, deceased); nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends to cherish his memory.

A community tribute to honor LaMont’s life and legacy will be announced in the coming weeks.
