Hillclimb racing is an immensely popular type of auto racing, particularly in the UK. Contestants race against the clock, making their way up a winding and very technical stretch of road to be crowned king of the hill. These extreme racers are unlike any other, constantly striving for perfection, shaving milliseconds off their personal bests through quicker driving and vehicle enhancements - with the latter often being extreme and not very aesthetically pleasing.

First unveiled in 2006, the original Audi R8 isn't a car you'd describe as slow. With a 420-horsepower 4.2-liter V8 as the entry-level engine, the first-generation mid-engined supercar could hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Audi later introduced an even more powerful V10 derivative, but that seemingly wasn't enough for Simon Bainbridge.

SB Racing's Audi R8 - if you can still call it that - has been extensively reworked, with a plethora of changes transforming it into a monster that shares very little with a road-going version. Even the glorious-sounding V8 has been replaced with another 4.2-liter V8 from the Audi stable, a twin-turbo unit from the C5-generation Audi RS6. It now produces over 750 hp - a far cry from the original motor's 444 hp.

Like the car on which it's based, SB Racing's creation is still mid-engined. A differential borrowed from an Audi S2 is used, while a Quaife six-speed sequential transmission sends power to the rear wheels.

Weighing in at just 940 kg (2,072 lbs) acceleration certainly isn't an issue. The featherweight mass is courtesy of a custom structure that utilizes a carbon fiber tub and tubular space frame. The pared-back front end replaces the R8's original face, the headlamps, bumper, and grille jettisoned for a no-nonsense, aggressive look with functioning aerodynamic benefits.

With Bainbridge behind the wheel, the V8-powered racer blasts up the hill, the grippy tires clinging to the wet surface. The combination of transmission whine and the almighty racket from the heavily tuned V8 is music to our ears. The Audi crosses the soaking wet finish line at an astonishing 117 mph. It's certainly one of the craziest Audi R8's we've seen in a while, although there are a few that come close.

The video, posted on the YouTube channel HillClimb Monsters, notes the SB Racing R8 has "all the ingredients to become a true monster… Now we just wait to see the next chapter of this adventure." Judging by the video, it would be hard to imagine this incredible machine even more hardcore than it already is, but if that's the case, then we can't wait to see what's next.
