KALAMAZOO, MI — The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners approved a contract for the sheriff’s office to buy dozens of in-car cameras to replace older existing equipment.

County commissioners approved the contract without discussion as part of its consent agenda on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

The current in-vehicle recording system was purchased in 2008, according to the agenda packet submitted to the county board.

The existing recording system is obsolete, the packet states, and it has become increasingly difficult to obtain replacement parts for and is expensive to maintain. The sheriff’s office does not currently have enough working cameras for all patrol vehicles, according to the county.

The Sheriff’s Office will purchase 38 cameras and vehicle licenses along with storage capability for $329,428.40, according to the county agenda document.

The purchase was part of the initial Axon Body Worn Camera Request for Proposals that was approved in 2020, the county said.

The funding was approved as part of the Capital improvement Program for 2022, according to the agenda packet.
