Gary is the villain everyone loves to hate on Tyler Perry’s Sistas, but he’s not irredeemable, insists Chido Nwokocha, the actor who has brought the baddie to life for four seasons.
“He’s not beyond redemption,” Nwokocha passionately tells TVLine about his character on the beloved BET series. “My hope is that in the next season or two, we’ll get to watch him evolve into a better man. Maybe by Season 6, fans will say, ‘I like Gary. He’s come a long way.’ Look at Zac. That brother has had an amazing come up.”
While Nwokocha, whose past credits include Days of Our Lives and Murder In the First, concedes that Zac’s path is nothing like Gary’s, he believes personal growth is possible.
“Zac’s journey is obviously different than Gary’s, and Gary has a lot more internal growing to do,” Nwokocha admits. “But it could happen. If he gets real professional help, instead of someone like Dr. Angela, he could learn to control his emotions and get his ego in check. We’ve seen glimmers of self-awareness, moments where Gary and Andi have talked and it seemed like things were cool until they went left.”
Ultimately, Gary and Andi don’t really know each other, Nwokocha observes, and it might be too late for them.
“As Chido, I am rooting for Gary,” he says. “Obviously, I have a personal investment, but I don’t think he’s a lost cause. I want him to get his act together and figure things out, even if that means he’s not with Andi anymore. He thinks she’s his ideal mate, but they haven’t had time to really sit down and get to know each other. Maybe if they did, they could become friends.”
Until that friendship blossoms, Nwokocha teases a Season 4 filled with Gary giving Andi lavish gifts to try and win her back. In last week’s episode, for instance, he bestowed his ex-fiancee with a $500,000 Rolls-Royce full of designer clothes and expensive jewelry. But will Andi take the Gucci goods and run, or will she hear Gary out?
“Gary’s understanding is that this is what you have to do to win the woman you love,” Nwokocha reveals. “Like a lot of rich and powerful men, persistence helped him achieve success, and he looks at Andi breaking up with him as yet another challenge to overcome. He’s not trying to lose in general, and that includes Andi. He is determined to win and have things go his way at all costs.”
The best part, Nwokocha says, will be seeing how fans respond to Gary’s winner-takes-all ways on social media.
“It’s a lot of fun playing a character like Gary, who is very different from myself,” Nwokocha concludes. “My interactions on Twitter and Instagram are insane. I love to see all the memes and GIFs and videos. I can’t figure out how they come up with them so quickly and so cleverly. They don’t spare the rod at all. But I have thick skin and a good sense of humor, and when they’re really funny, I even respond.”
Do you think it’s possible for Gary to become a better person? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
Gary would be boring if he was good.
We are waiting for season it has only two episodes please hurry up bring the rest😉
I actually think he can become a better man if he over comes the jealousy and stop trying to be controlling if Andi stop listening to her friends talk and get to really know who Gray is they might can have a good relationship bot of them need change
Everybody deserves a chance but Gary hell to the no. I don’t like him, he’s to controlling and jealous.
And don’t forget physically and verbally abusive, you can’t go back to anyone that treats you in that manor. No amount of counseling is going to help that and lastly both he and Andi are wrong on how the relationship started with him being a married man with a family…no body is going to bless that union…ijs
He’s not beyond redemption. I must say tho”he went ALL OUT…
Physically,mentally,@verbally abusive, hell to thee no. He’s not redeemable aftr dat type of narcassistic kind of behavior… Nope. Srry. I take dat comment B4 this one bk. Fa sho…
Maybe. They need to do something with Karen. She’s not a very good fit for the movie. Come on Tyler!!!
I feel like he can change. might not change enough for her. Are it is just too late. Maybe he has destroyed what she had for him on the inside. But it is nice to see a man chase after what he wants in a positive way. But once you lose that trust no gifts in the world can get that back. And Zack and Fatima‘s love for each other is so refreshing thanks Tyler
Gary could probably turn into a better person with a lot of psychological help. He has a problem and he needs to face it and want change himself. Andi doesn’t need a man like this, she can make it without him and no more married men.
Now everyone wants to be Zatima. First Ebony Obsidian (Karen) wanted her character to be nicer and now Chido Nwokocha wants redemption for his character. This just solidify my belief that Zatima’s popularity was not planned or written to be a success but was stumbled across. Sistas started with the typical storyline of Tyler Perry’s black women. The typical stereotypical thinking of the weak, confused, unstable, dependent, lost, abused, low self esteem, settling black woman who is unable to move on from her situation or sleeping around to get through life. But then Fatima comes along with her high energy, high self esteem, confidence, stable, not settling but able to hold her own and the fans go wild. We love Fatima because not only is she different from the regular TP characters but she is relatable or at the very least inspirational. Many have admitted that they only watch the show because they have fallen in love with Zatima,(of course his loyal fans watch because it’s TP regardless of the script.) Zatima is a more positive and relatable story line between 2 black people who are not perfect but who are supporting one another’s imperfection to encourage positive change in one another. No whole bunch of druriness and crying or an inability to think through to the next step but two people strong enough to learn from their mistakes and know that they don’t want to go down that same road again. Also a very good actor and actress. Just think of how powerful the Sistas storyline would have been with 5 beautiful black Fatimas holding it down and being successful in their chosen careers while navigating life. Think of how much better KJ Smith’s character Andi’s would have been as a confident black woman who happens to be a successful lawyer, or Ebony’s character as a self made innovative entrepreneur who was self aware. Or Sabrina as an engineering corporate administrator with high self esteem who didn’t have to settle for confusion in her love life to get or keep a man. The only one in my opinion that comes fairly close to Fatima is Danni because at least she is willing to speak up for herself and she doesn’t appear as fearful as the others to accept reality. Danni is the only one who has been willing to evaluate her love life and say what she wants and was willing to question was sex the only thing that her and Preston had in common, even though she didn’t think through the consequences yet she was willing to be truthful with herself. This is why so many want Tyler Perry to invite other writers to collaborate with him. It’s important to know the mind of a woman when you are constantly writing about them. His stereotypical thinking towards women but especially black women is not a good representation of the lives of black women today. We are in an age where women especially black women are fighting hard to be represented accurately. Yes there are have flaws to overcome and mistakes that have been made but that shouldn’t always be the representation of the black woman’s life. As Fatima is showing there is so much more to a black woman and a few black women writers could bring that to the front line in a few Tyler Perry production. I guess Chido Nwokocha should be glad that Tyler Perry doesn’t get it because if TP did Andi would have been strong and Chido Nwokocha character would have been gone in season 2. A Fatima Andi would have kicked him to the curb a long time ago.
True
WOW!!!!!!! I have been making these same comments since Fatima joined this series. I wonder how much influence Crystal has in the lines her character gets. TP has turned the Karen character into a neurotic idiot. Andi’s character has never been believable! Danni is changing into a butthead! And Sabrina is pathetic! I’m just waiting for Devale Ellis to get that big break and leave this show; then I’m out. Everyone is in agreement that TP needs help with the writing. This could be a good show if there was more consistency in the storyline.
I think it is possible,he can change, would be nice
I really think Gary can change but he got to get rid of his anger ,jealousy, and controlling ways, but it may be too late for him with Andi.
Still waiting for season 4 already watched ep 1 and ep 2 where are the rest😞
Gary’s character has a long, long way to go. He doesn’t live in reality. He needs help getting himself in check
I hope the Gary character gets an improved overhaul. Chico is an excellent actor and I’d like to see show his ability.
Fact: All the money, cars, whatever cannot by true LOVE. Love is a feeling that comes from the heart. Love is a feeling from within the soul. When it is true love you know. Gary only knows how to be a controlling, jealous,
delusional jackass. Andi needs to let no mean no. She needs to stop second guessing herself let Gary move on. With counseling and I mean real counseling he may become a good man. But I don’t believe he is the one for Andi. Dani got just what she deserved from Preston. That fine man cared deeply for her. Dani problem is she have life and BS confused. Hope she figure it out before it’s too late for her and Preston. Love this show Tyler Perry just don’t screw up Zac and Fatima.
I think Gary is corney and Andi deserves better!
I think Zac & Fatima should stay together they are good for each other so Tyler don’t break them up, Please! & I am hoping that her baby is really for Aaron, Zac needs to get a DNC just to make sure, & hopes it turn out to be Preacher Man’s baby & not Zac’s Karen can stay with Aaron she can learn to love him like he loves Her, & leave Zac & Fatima along,,, leave Z&F alone Mr. T Perry cause they’re Great for each other!!
Why are people suggesting that Karen should get with the preacher man? Karen definitely is not build to be a preacher’s wife. Even Aaron had to talk to Karen about the way she treated Zac and that’s her. She is miserable and she love company. And preacher man is much too weak to be with Karen. Aaron is a recovering alcoholic who fell off the wagon because of Karen and he threw his celibacy out the window because of his jealousy of Zac and his jumping through hoops to win Karen’s attention and attraction. What a horrible couple they would make. Karen would eventually treat Aaron like she did Zac because Aaron has no backbone when it comes to Karen and Aaron will always feel insecure with Karen because he knows that Karen wants Zac.
I love Fatima & Zac together. Karen did not want Zac now that he is with Fatima she wants him back. Bye Karen!. Sabrina need to find a real man and stick with him. I love the country boy, keep him around and find him a beautiful sister to settle down with. PLease TP do not take Fatima & Zac to another chanel we have to pay for. TY
