Cattaraugus County has reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the second week in a row. Statistics from the Cattaraugus County Health Department show that the county reported 1,240 new cases of the virus from January 9-15, which is a 23.3% increase compared to the previous week. The new cases include 600 in the southeast part of the county, 288 in the northeast part of the county, 193 in the northwest part of the county, and 159 in the southwest part of the county. As of Saturday, the number of active cases in the county has increased by 37.4%, while the seven-day average infection rate was 20.3%. Meanwhile, the county's daily updates no longer contain information regarding hospitalizations and people in quarantine; the most recent data available shows 25 hospitalizations and 511 people in quarantine as of January 12th. Both figures were down from January 8th.
The county also reported seven new COVID-19 deaths for the week. The latest victims included four men ages 41, 73, 80 and 88; as well as a 66-year-old woman from Olean and two other women ages 51 and 91. All seven developed respiratory failure and were unable to overcome their illnesses despite aggressive medical treatment.
As of Saturday, the county has reported 14,122 cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those cases, 849 are active, 13,048 have recovered, and 225 have died.
