Real Madrid star Karim Benzema admits he is saddened by modern football even though it means he is ‘seen as the best’

REAL MADRID star has condemned modern football for its focus on statistics and the decline of fans' attention spans.

Benzema, 34, is enjoying a fruitful season in front of goal with 24 goals in just 27 matches.

But it is the focus on his scoring efficiency that is troubling the Frenchman as he argues it is not necessarily a good barometer of how well he is playing.

In an interview with France Football Benzema said: "We don't consume football like we used to. We can't follow a game for 90 minutes. There are social networks.

"We don't have time to look at what a player does on the pitch, we just look at what he scored.

"And the next day we consider the latter as the It's happened to me.

"I don't play a good game, but I score a goal and I'm seen as the best.

"I don't like that kind of football, but in the future it will be more and more like that.

Benzema was not always renowned for his goalscoring prowess having often played the role of provider for Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

But since Vinicius Jr. came into the side he has flourished in front of goal, scoring 23 league goals last term - his second-highest ever tally behind 24 goals in 2015-16.

The striker looks set to break that record this year to help propel Real Madrid to the La Liga title.

He also has five goals in five Champions League games with Vinicius contributing four assists in the competition - highlighting how important the pair are to Real's attack.
