Alabama man charged in 2021 crash that killed woman

A Pisgah man is being held on multiple charges in connection with a fatal wreck that killed a woman last year.

Tony Ray Sargent, 54, was arrested on warrants Jan. 15. He has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and driving under the influence, and lesser charges. He is being held on $36,922 bond, according to jail records.

A Jackson County grand jury indicted Sargent in December, according to court records, in connection with a fatal vehicle crash on Jan. 19, 2021 on Alabama 40, about one mile southeast of Scottsboro.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Tonia Michelle Phillips, 47, died at the scene of the crash after the 2003 Nissan Xterra in which she was a passenger left the roadway and overturned.

Sargent, who was driving, was injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
