Sci-Port hosting Black History Month program and meet and eat with the Yeti in the Spaghetti

Sci-Port Discovery Center announced two fun events for February including a Yeti and Spaghetti Meet & Eat and a special Black History Month program. 

To kick off Black History Month, Sci-Port will be hosting a "living history program" on Sunday, Feb. 6 from 1-4 p.m. This special, free event will have three Black guest speakers who made history. 

Sci-Port Discovery Center to host a Black History Month program with actors portraying famous African Americans in history.

Matthew Henson was an explorer best known for co-discovering the North Pole in 1909 and was the first Black man in the world to stand on top of it. 

Dr. Mae Jemison was an American astronaut and physician who became the first African American woman to be admitted into NASA's astronaut training program in 1987 and was the first Black woman in space aboard the "Endeavour" in 1992. 

Garrett Morgan was an early 20th Century Black inventor with patents for a hair-straightening product, a breathing device that became the blueprint for WWI gas masks and the modern-day traffic light.

Three professional actors will be portraying these legends who will be positioned throughout the Sci-Port Discovery Center. Their performances will be stacked and rotated so guests can visit all of them during the program. 

Local chef, Niema Longstratt with the RNL Cookery food truck will be on-site to serve lunch. 

Sci-Port Discovery Center will be hosting a Meet & Eat themed around the popular children's book and board game "There's a Yeti in my Spaghetti".

On Saturday Feb. 12 from 11a.m. - 2p.m. Sci-Port is turning the popular children's book and board game "There's a Yet in My Spaghetti" into a live, interactive event. 

The mythical and legendary Yeti, who lives and hides among the lands of snow and ice, will be coming to Sci-Port as part of a special Sno-Port program where guests can meet Freddie the Yeti in an interactive science-inspired playground. 

Giuseppe's Pastacaffé will be there serving their homemade spaghetti at the Sci-Port café at 11:30 a.m. and Noon. In addition to meeting Freddie and eating spaghetti, there will also be a Yeti building blocks competition inside Sno-Port from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. where there will be first, second and third place prizes and the Science Demonstration Theater program will highlight the creation of Liquid Nitrogen drinks showcasing the science-based version of a slushie and how it's made.

You can enjoy the meet and eat event for the cost of the regular admission price of Sno-Port (prices are different for members and non-members). Sno-Port is priced separately from a regular admission ticket to Sci-Port, but specially priced combo tickets can be purchased to include a visit to the entire Sci-Port center which includes the POP gallery and the IMAX Theatre. The pre-purchase of tickets are highly encouraged and they can be purchased at the Sci-Port website or on the Sci-Port Facebook page

All current city mandates in regard to COVID at the time of the programs will be followed. The use of hand sanitizing stations and practice of social distancing is strongly encouraged.
