Child rapist pardoned by former Gov. Matt Bevin withdraws request to clear record
A child rapist from northern Kentucky who was pardoned by former Gov. Matt Bevin has withdrawn his request to expunge those crimes from his record.
Micah Schoettle was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl. He served 19 months before Bevin pardoned him in 2019, just before leaving office.
He also was not required to register as a sex offender.
In the pardon, Bevin wrote Schoettle was convicted based on testimony not supported by physical evidence. He called the investigation and prosecution sloppy at best.
Since then, Schoettle had applied to erase his conviction from his record in December, but that request was withdrawn before a hearing Tuesday.
The prosecutor said Schoettle can always reapply.
"It's offensive, it's mind boggling how any governor could be this irresponsible. It's an abomination to the criminal justice system, you know it's a sad day for Kentucky," Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders said at the time of the pardon.
