Now that the Patriots' season has come to an end, the attention is how on the offseason and making the team better for the years to come.
Retired offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia knows the Patriots perhaps better than anyone, having spent so long working for the organization, and speaking with Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, he offered his take for what the team needs.
A No. 1, dependable wide receiver.
“We’ve always had that guy, a guy who moved the chains,” Scarnecchia said. “Whether it was Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola when all else failed, he was that guy. But they don’t have that guy right now.”
He added: “They gotta get a better supporting cast around (Mac). They don’t want to hear that, but that’s the truth. Other than Jakobi Meyers, who do they got?”
Scarnecchia isn't wrong, the question just becomes how can the Patriots get a No. 1 wide receiver when there are other needs on the roster.
This offseason is not like last offseason when the Patriots had close to the most cap space in the league -- they will need to be careful with their spending. And obviously, a No. 1 receiver would come with a cost.
Via draft is possible, picking No. 21 overall, but the Patriots do not have a good history with drafting wide receivers and need to get younger/faster on defense.
It's clear the offense does need to upgrade its weapons for Jones, the question is will it be able to happen this offseason?
