  • Mohamed Salah was snubbed in FIFA's 'The Best' XI on Monday evening
  • The team was criticised for its strange formation including four attackers
  • Despite that, there was no spot for Liverpool's Salah - even though he was nominated for the Men's Player of the Year award
  • Former team-mate Dejan Lovren cannot believe the Egyptian didn't make the list

Dejan Lovren has slammed Mohamed Salah's omission from FIFA's 'The Best' XI and even joked his best friend might need a European passport in order to be included.

The Liverpool star, who was nominated for the main Men's Player of the Year award but was beaten to it by Robert Lewandowski, was not named in the eleven which was criticised for its strange formation.

But despite the inclusion of four attackers - Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo - Salah did not make the cut, and former Reds centre back Lovren took to social media to express his disbelief.

'People with knowledge about football, they know that he deserves to be in there. What needs to be done to be there? Maybe a European passport?'

Lovren, who left the Reds in 2020 when he moved to Zenit St Petersburg, formed a close friendship with Salah during their three years together on Merseyside.

The pair were regularly photographed together and have also video called each other at times during the pandemic.

They won the Champions League and Premier League together in 2019 and 2020 respectively too, before the Croatian moved on to pastures new.

Salah is currently captaining Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

There was also no space for Chelsea's Edouard Mendy, despite the Senegalese shot-stopper actually winning the FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Yet he was also omitted in 'The Best' XI - PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma instead took the goalkeeper position.
