DRAPER — One person died in a car fire that temporarily closed ramps on Bangerter Highway and northbound I-15 in Draper Tuesday morning.

Just before 3 a.m. a northbound driver on I-15 was likely speeding when they took the Bangerter Highway exit, went across the overpass, crashed into a barrier and the vehicle burst into flames halfway down the I-15 on-ramp, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Andrew Bollard said.

"They traveled all the way from the off-ramp across all lanes, then collided with the concrete barrier on the opposite side of Bangerter, and they still had enough momentum to continue halfway down the on-ramp. Early indications are an extremely high rate of speed," said Bollard.

The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived.

The driver was killed in the crash, UHP said. Information about the individual has not yet been released.

The on-ramp and off-ramp at Bangerter and northbound I-15 were closed, as well as the Bangerter overpass. Eastbound traffic was being diverted onto southbound I-15. Vehicles headed west were diverted at 150 East.

Bangerter Highway, however, reopened around 8:30 a.m.
