Edgardo Alfonzo hopes to be back in the Big Apple.
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports “Former Mets great Edgardo Alfonzo is the leading candidate to manage the new minor league team at Staten Island, the Ferry Hawks. They will play in the independent Atlantic League.”
Earlier this month, the New York Post’s Mike Puma reported Alfonzo made a bid to join New York Mets manager Buck Showalter in Queens.
Edgardo Alfonzo has reached out to the Mets hoping for a return in a coaching or player development capacity, but hasn’t received any indication the organization is interested in rehiring him. Alfonzo still makes occasional appearances at Citi Field as a club ambassador.
For the Win reported Alfonzo planted his coaching roots eight years ago.
The former infielder took over as a bench coach for the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Single-A minor league affiliate of the Mets, in 2014. He also served as a roaming instructor for the MLB team and he eventually became head coach of the Cyclones in 2017. Even though the Cyclones won the New York – Penn League Championship in 2019, his contract was not renewed.
The 48-year-old Alfonzo spent 12 seasons in the big leagues, making his MLB debut with the Mets in 1995. Alfonzo won a Silver Slugger Award in 1999 when he hit a career-best 27 home runs. Alfonzo was an All-Star in 2000, helping the club advance to the World Series against the New York Yankees.
Alfonzo later played for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays. In 1,506 MLB games, Alfonzo hit .284 with 146 home runs.
