Gervonta Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko: Tank’s trainer Calvin Ford says “We’re waiting on that fight”

By Allan Fox: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ trainer Calvin Ford says they’re waiting for a mega-fight with Vasily Lomachenko and he thinks it’ll be a huge contest when it happens.

Davis could have fought Lomachenko years ago, but his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. hasn’t chosen to let Tank take the fight.

It’s believed that Mayweather is waiting until Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) has gotten sufficiently old before he lets Gervonta face him.

It’s too bad because it would have been a huge one if Tank had fought Lomachenko two to three years ago.

Ford says that in 2022 all the top lightweights are going to fight each other. Boxing fans have doubts whether the top guys at 135 will fight this year or choose to milk their titles against weak opposition.

Gervonta Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko = Chess match

Davis is going to need to fight a lot better than he did in his last contest against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz if he wants to fight Lomachenko now. However, we don’t know if that fight will happen soon.

If Mayweather waits three to five years before letting Tank Davis fight Lomachenko, then you’d have to give the Baltimore native a heck of a shot at winning.

It would be a breath of fresh air if Mayweather let Tank Davis fight Lomachenko now because it’s going to be pointless to make the match if Loma is old and over-the-hill.

“We waiting on that fight,” said trainer Calvin Ford to ESNEWS when asked about his thoughts on a future Gervonta Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko fight.

“It’s going to be a chess match. I don’t know if Loma will take the chances that he will with Tank, but that’s a mega-fight, to tell you the truth. It’s a fight that people have been waiting on.

“I don’t know what his [Lomachenko] next fight is. 2022 is going to be a really interesting year for all of them, to tell you the truth because they got to fight each other.

“I heard Shakur is trying to fight them. That’s a good one, that’s a step-up fight for both of them,” said Ford in reacting to the news of Stevenson fighting Oscar Valdez next on April 30th. “I’m always going to grow with Shakur.

Ford on Gervonta fighting Kambosos

“I don’t train Tank for knockouts,  but it’s going to be a brutal fight,” said Ford when asked what happens when Gervonta fights undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr.

I don’t think Gervonta is going to fight undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. for a couple of reasons. First off, it would require that Tank Davis fly to Australia to fight in a stadium.

Tank’s promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t going to put him in a situation where he’s the visiting fighter facing the Australian George Kambosos Jr. in his home country of Australia.

Even though it would be an easily winnable fight for Tank Davis, it would make him huge money and it would increase his popularity, it’s unlikely that Mayweather will let him take the fight with Kambosos.

Instead, we’ll see Tank fight fellow Mayweather-promoted fighter Rolando Romero next in a low-level match, which will be sold on Showtime PPV. I can’t imagine that fight bringing in more than a small handful of buys on pay-per-view.

Ryan Garcia vs. Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz

Man, how many times are we going to hear Ryan is going to fight somebody?” said Hunter to ESNEWS when asked about his thoughts on Ryan Garcia fighting Isaac Cruz.

“Ryan isn’t going to fight somebody until he gets in the ring.  It’s as simple as that. I get that,” said ford when reminded that Ryan suffered a wrist injury while training for his canceled fight with Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr last November.

The problem that Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) has is that he’s already a multi-millionaire and he’s only 23-years-old. Despite beating mainly fluff opposition his entire career, he’s got a net worth of $10 million and makes a ton of money on social media.

When you have the kind of money that Ryan possesses, it’s got to be hard for him to find the motivation to step it up and begin fighting quality opposition?

To fight the guys that Ryan needs to for him to improve, you got to live boxing 100%, and he’s not going that. Hence, Ryan only fought once last year and pulled out of two fights.

“I’m at a point with Ryan where I just want to see him in the ring, and I’m back on board,” said Ford. “The fight is a good fight because Ryan is picking that fight. They think they can get Cruz out of there quicker than Tank.

“It’s a recipe for what all fighters do. They’ll fight somebody else and go, ‘I got them out quicker.’  It’s to get the fans interested and talking and everything.

“If he can get Isaac in the ring, he’s going to take the fight if they give him a fight that his people will take as far as the money-wise,” said Ford about Ryan Garcia.

As of two weeks ago, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions ruled out Ryan Garcia facing Isaac Cruz. De La Hoya said that Pitbull turned down the fight with Ryan.

Interestingly, Cruz’s promoter Sean Gibbons fired back at De La Hoya saying that he gave the fans a false message.  Gibbons then invited Ryan to begin talks for a fight with Cruz.

Since then, Ryan hasn’t made a peep about Cruz, which suggests that he didn’t want that smoke.

The fighter than Ryan is rumored to be facing in April is Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr. They’re said to be rescheduling that fight, which makes sense for Golden Boy Promotions because they promote Ryan and Jojo.

It would be an in-house fight and one that’s winnable for Ryan, but it won’t do anything for his career because Jojo isn’t an elite-level fighter. Moreover, Jojo is coming off of a loss to WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.

If Golden Boy wanted to turn Ryan into a star, they’d match him against Vasily Lomachenko, Kambosos Jr, Isaac Cruz, Gervonta Davis, and Devin Haney.
