Gregory Flanigan

Gregory Flanigan, 85, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022. He was born Jan. 19, 1936, in Salamanca, N.Y., and grew up in Jamestown, N.Y., where he attended St. James Parish Grade School and graduated from Jamestown High School in June of 1954. He then joined the U.S. Navy in July of 1954 and served four years, spending three of those years as a sonarman aboard the USS James C. Owens, a destroyer. When visiting relatives in Elyria, Gregory met Martha Kiser, whom he then married on June 20, 1959.

Gregory is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; daughters: Molly Parsson of Brunswick and Laura Kelling of Columbia Station; sons: Michael and Daniel, both of Elyria, and John of Lake Orion, Mich. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; thfee great- granddaughters; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Anna Flanigan; brothers: James and Joseph; sister, Patricia Hodder; and son, James.

Gregory attended both Jamestown Community College and Finn College of Cleveland, pursuing a career in the finance business, ending with Erie Shore Mortgage. He has been a member of St. Jude Church since 1959. He played slow pitch softball for Elyria Eagles and St. Mary’s Church, and served as the treasurer of the Eagles for over 20 years. He had a keen interest in the history of U.S. wars, and was a member of James C. Owens Association, serving as both director and historian, and attending reunions from 1993 to 2017. He also sponsored the Flanigan Family Reunions from 1992 – 2010.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 18 from 3-5 p.m. at Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria. The funeral Mass will be held at St Jude Church, 590 Poplar St., Elyria, on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Jude Food Pantry in his memory.
