How I Met Your Father is operating under a slightly different framework than its predecessor.
Whereas the How I Met Your Mother pilot’s big twist was that Ted was on a date with “Aunt Robin,” the big reveal at the end of the sequel series’ premiere is that Sophie (played by Hilary Duff) has already met the father — and he’s probably one of four guys: Pemberton’s Pub owner Sid (Suraj Sharma), Uber driver Jesse (Chris Lowell), Tinder date Ian (Daniel Augustin) or Valentina’s new beau Charlie (Tom Ainsley).
One more thing: In the year 2050, it appears that 58-year-old Sophie (played by Kim Cattrall) is no longer romantically entangled with her baby daddy, which is indicated not only by her conversation with her son, but by her empty ring finger.
“[How I Met Your Mother] was about a journey for Ted to meet this woman. This show is more of a journey to figure out where all of these men fit into [Sophie’s] life,” series co-creator Isaac Aptaker tells TVLine. “It really becomes more of a coming-of-age story for her as a woman. So much of finding your person has to do with timing and who you are at any given moment, and Sophie really has a lot of growing to do as a person before she is ready to wind up with the father.”
Adds fellow co-creator Elizabeth Berger, “One of the things that’s really cool about this device is that there will be these little, unexpected moments and exchanges with our guys, where all of a sudden you’ve been watching one guy, and then suddenly there’s a conversation and someone else comes into focus in a really surprising, exciting way.”
Of course, there’s always the off chance that the dad isn’t one of the core four.
“In our pilot she makes clear that she met the father that night, which leaves a little bit of wiggle room as to who our father is,” Berger points out. “We’re going to have our core guys, which we hope and imagine people will be very invested in, but there will also be the larger world out there that we can draw from in terms of what happened all throughout that night.”
In addition to the paternity twist, HIMYF differs from the Mother-ship by showing Cattrall in the flesh, versus having her serve as an omniscient narrator (like the late Bob Saget). And while the reversal might have been done in part to conceal the potentially mixed race of Sophie’s son, it was also a no brainer once the Powers That Be cast the former Sex and the City vixen.
“That was baked into the DNA of the show,” Berger says. “It was always the intention… and honestly, once we cast Kim Cattrall, it just made us double down on that decision, because you can’t have Kim Cattrall and not show her. It would just be such a waste.”
I thought the main reason they showed Cattrall instead of the son was so they wouldn’t have to tape the ending a bunch of seasons before it airs (to have him be the same age as at the beginning) and then have their hands tied by it until the very end.
Gosh, that would be awful. Could ruin a show. Who’d be stupid enough to do that?
No one. No one could ever be that stupid to do that. It would be the worst ending of a tv show in the history of the medium. Everyone would see that.
*Applauds*
Honestly it wasnt that bad imo. It can definitely improve, but most new sitcoms have a tendency to be growing pains in their first seasons and usually don’t find their footing till the back half of it at the earliest.
After seeing the previews, I went in thinking it would be terrible, but I actually loved it. I can’t wait to see where it goes.
Also, at the end of the episode, it brought it back to the old apartment from the parent series.

Mamma Mia the series?
Well now I want them all to sing…
I’m getting original series ending vibes from this, but instead of blindsiding fans they’re setting it up in advance. She’s not with the father so she will probably end up with her “soul mate” in the end. I suspect that Jesse will be her “Robin” and therefore not the father. I thought from the preview she might end up with her friend’s boyfriend, but that I’m not sure.
“How I met your Father, that I left…or left me.” Wow, what a romantic storyline to follow….
Robin wasn’t his ”soulmate”. HIMYM showed that there isn’t such thing as one soulmate for whole life and that there may be several great loves (or soulmates if you will) in one’s life. Also, there were hints in the original that the Mother won’t make it into the future. Not defending the finale though…
I mean, I think Tracy was definitely his soulmate though. I think it’s like, there’s a lot of people in your life that are right at the right time, and there’s 1 (or maybe a few) that could be your ‘right for anytime’. Tracy was the latter, Robin was the former. I think Tracy and Ted would’ve worked no matter when in their lives they met. If Tracy had lived, I don’t think Ted would’ve spent his older years still pining for Robin.
Sophie is Ted, Jesse is Robin. The End.
Not necessarily. The End.
Sounds to me like the movie “Definitely, Maybe.” That was a divorced man telling his daughter a story of three women he dated and the girl trying to guess which one was her mother.
Indeed!
Such a cute movie!
Loved it. I’m hoping there was lessons learned from HIMYM and it won’t be a Ted/Robin thing. I do want Jesse and Sophie together though, after just two episodes. I loved them both. Never really loved Ted haha.
Sophie is definitely better than Ted so far. Ted being such a hardcore romantic honestly made his character kind of annoying until the final season when we actually got to see scenes of him with his soul mate. Sophie seems to at least be a realistic person who realizes that love isn’t necessarily a fairytale.
Twist- She is a lesbian and ends up with the lesbian sister. The father is just the sperm donor.
“How I got impregnated by your father.” Doesn’t have quite the same ring….
So instead of disappointing fans in the series finale like HIMYM, HIMYF is letting viewers know in the first episode that they will be disappointed, I guess that’s fair…
Wasn’t Sophie’s apartment the same as the one in 2 Broke Girls?
No, not at all.
My money is currently on Sid, but I’d like that better if they were still together in the Cattrall time
Maybe she isn’t wearing a ring because Jesse is never getting married…..
But they’re still together.
