The Good Doctor fans, we will all have to keep wondering what happened to Shaun (Freddie Highmore).

For a fifth year in a row, the ABC medical drama premiered in late September as part of the network's fall TV lineup. Since then, new episodes have been airing every Monday night at 10 p.m. ET ... that is, up until late November when The Good Doctor aired its winter finale. After Glassman (Richard Schiff) told Shaun that he was moving to Montana, he tried to take the news in stride. But try as he might, a snowball effect ensued when Lea (Paige Spara) later confessed that she had fixed his patient reviews by deleting the worst ones, directly going against what he had asked for. After not accepting her apology, Shaun tried to put the matter on the back burner and focus on his case. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned and he lost his patient, a premature baby, because of expired medicine.

With that, Shaun reached his limit, and in a spat of anger, he told Lea that he doesn’t trust her anymore and he couldn’t marry her. So, what happens next? We don’t know, and it sounds like it’ll be some time before we find out.

When does The Good Doctor return in 2022?

The Good Doctor will return to ABC with new episodes this spring. On December 2, the show’s official Instagram and Twitter accounts posted a two-minute video of the heartbreaking scene described above. The caption subtly announced major news about when the drama will come back. “Our hearts absolutely broke during this scene 💔 #TheGoodDoctor returns this spring,” it read.

But when exactly in the spring? As of right now, there is no official return date. We’ll be on the lookout and will update this post with details as they are released.

There is a silver lining, though: Shortly after the latest episode aired, viewers got a sneak peek of what to expect for season 5, episode 8. In the 30-second promo clip above, Shaun appears to have made up his mind about ending his engagement to Lea. Meanwhile, Lim (Christina Chang) has her eyes set on taking down Salen (Rachel Bay Jones) after the expired medicine incident.

The anticipation is too much!
