Boys hockey: Verdon’s hat trick helps Toms River East over Freehold Township

Jake Verdon had a hat trick to help Toms River East to a 5-3 win over Freehold Township on Monday at Winding River in Toms River.

The hat trick was the first of the junior Verdon’s career. Ryan Fortunato had two goals for Toms River East as Fortunato and Verdon combined for the teams’ scoring.

Verdon had two first-period goals around Freehold Township goals from Jake Butler and Zach Neron. The game was tied after two periods as well, with Lucas Palm putting Freehold Township ahead before Fortunato’s first tied it in the final minute of the period.

Fortunato and Verdon each had a goal in the third period on the way to the win.

Chase Witt had 20 saves in the win for Toms River East (3-7-4), which is unbeaten in three straight (1-0-2) and will face Pennsauuken on Friday.

Freehold Township (5-7) will face Howell on Thursday.
