Oklahoma football gains commitment from ACC defensive back transfer
Former North Carolina defensive back Trey Morrison will transfer to Oklahoma, he announced Monday. Morrison will use his extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to play one more season.
The defensive back immediately made an impact after joining the Tar Heels in 2018, starting 10 of 11 games as a true freshman. He has been a staple in the UNC secondary ever since, finishing this past season with a career-high 47 tackles. He has accumulated 163 tackles, two interceptions and 15 passes defended throughout his career with North Carolina.
Morrison, a native of Norcross, Georgia, attended Greater Atlanta Christian High School. He was a three-star recruit and the No. 811 overall player in the class of 2018 according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Iowa State, Maryland and West Virginia were among the many schools to extend him an offer out of high school.
North Carolina entered this past season ranked No. 10 in the AP poll, but failed to live up to the hype. The Tar Heels finished the year with a 6-7 record, losing to South Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. It was the worst finish for the program since Morrison arrived in 2018.
The Sooners finished this past season 11-2, defeating Oregon in the Alamo Bowl. After coach Lincoln Riley left for USC at the season’s conclusion, Oklahoma hired Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables as his replacement. It opens the 2022 season on Sept. 3 against the UTEP Miners.
The defensive back transfer will get his first opportunity to make an impact for his new team when Oklahoma opens the 2022 season on Sept. 3 against UTEP.
Morrison isn’t the only transfer looking to shine with the Sooners next season, however. Offensive lineman McKade Mettauer (California), quarterback Dillon Gabriel (UCF) and linebacker TD Roof (Appalachian State) are just a few more of the new faces in Norman.
