After four seasons with Adrian Martinez at quarterback, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are moving on at the position. Martinez has transferred to Kansas State while head coach Scott Frost has gone to the transfer portal to find his next signal-caller.

On Monday, Nebraska landed another transfer in Florida State’s Chubba Purdy. He announced he would be heading to Lincoln via Twitter, where he will battle for the starting job with former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson. Purdy originally entered the transfer portal on Nov. 3.

Purdy only played in four games during his time with Florida State over two seasons. He completed 55.2% of his throws for 317 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. Only appearing against UMass this year for the Seminoles, Purdy was five for five 98 yards and two touchdowns.

As a recruit, Purdy was a four-star prospect according to the On3 Consensus. He was originally a member of the 2020 recruiting class and is the younger brother of former Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy was a top 200 player coming out of high school and ranked the No. 14 quarterback. From his home state of Arizona, he was the No. 7 prospect. Nebraska did not originally offer Purdy out of high school but won the transfer recruitment against Oklahoma.

Nebraska Cornhuskers land Casey Thompson

Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Casey Thompson is heading to Nebraska, he announced via his Instagram account. Thompson’s decision comes three weeks after he opted to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.

“Always bet on yourself! Nebraska, let’s get it,” Thompson captioned his post.

Thompson saw highs and lows during this season. He opened the year as Hudson Card’s backup for Texas, but quickly took control of the starting quarterback job. On the season, Thompson completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,113 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also rushed 55 times for 157 yards and four touchdowns. His 24 passing touchdowns led all Big 12 quarterbacks.

Thompson comes to Nebraska looking to bring a spark after a disappointing season. The Cornhuskers went 3-9 this year, including a 1-8 record against Big Ten opponents. Only Indiana (2-10, 0-9) had a worse record in the Big Ten, while Northwestern was also 3-9 overall and 1-8 in the Big Ten.

Now, he and Purdy will battle it out for the starting role this spring. Thompson will have two years of eligibility remaining, while Purdy has four. At the very least, Forst has brought in two quality quarterbacks and gives the room stability for the next few seasons.
