Residents in northern New Jersey spent the first part of Monday clearing their driveways and sidewalks of snow and ice after a storm moved through the state during the overnight hours.
The snow was so wet and slushy that it rendered Butler resident Bill Mendoza’s snowblower useless.
“It’s broken because it’s too wet,” he says.
Mendoza’s wife Nancy is 74 years old. But she was helping to shovel out her neighbor who is 20 years older.
“None of it was easy work,” Nancy Mendoza says.
Down at the end of the dead-end street block, the Petrera family was shoveling out the sewer drain to keep water from ponding and turning Leonard Road into an ice rink overnight.
“You can’t shovel it, it’s too heavy,” says Bill Betrera. “You have to push, everybody. I told everybody, ‘Don’t pick it up, just push.’”
Only areas of northern New Jersey saw snow during the storm. Areas of southern New Jersey only saw rain.
Temperatures were expected to drop Monday night, causing the potential for icy conditions.
