HanesBrands is making a $2 million investment in historically black colleges and universities. The money is going to three schools — two that are right here in the Triad.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Winston-Salem State University are the local recipients, with the third being Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design in Detroit, Michigan.

The money will be used for research and student financial support — particularly in the areas of sustainability, fashion design and supply chain management.

The partnership also extends to scholarships, internships, mentorships and research grants.

According to a press release, HanesBrands' goal is to support at least ten million people by 2030. The company says it will do this via diversity initiatives, health and wellness programs, workplace improvements and community-focused philanthropic efforts.

Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson of Winston-Salem State University says the real-world industry experience and network building that results from this investment will be valuable as WSSU students prepare for their careers.
