James Gunn On How Budget Impacts Films Like GOTG 3
The amount of money that goes in to making films can be mind-boggling. Then when you see successful franchises bring in millions (at times pushing the billion mark) in earnings, it seems difficult to think of budgets being such a limiting factor at times. Once it seems as if the financial ceiling has been set, we hear of another film that blasts through it. It is easy to think that successful films, and directors, can be more than catered to. However, there still has to be limits. James Gunn recently speaks to Collider about how the limitations a budget can bring. Even to a large film such as Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
For the average guy like me, it’s difficult to even think about what all goes into a massive film budget. That’s clearly why the professionals are in charge. While speaking with Collider, Gunn is asked about writing Peacemaker. Since he is experienced in low, and high budget films, does he keep a budget in mind? Or, does he just write and hope the budget works around his ideas?
Gunn focuses initially on the budget. That shouldn’t be too difficult with the type of money he is given, right? Not so much. He states that even having half a billion dollars still makes it difficult to fully do what he wants on a film such as GOTG 3. Gunn expresses that it would be close, but still creates limitations to his true vision:
“I’m always having to think about budget and make concessions because of budget, but oftentimes it leads to good things. You oftentimes are forced to rethink something and you have to come up with a creative solution.”

Having half a billion dollars and still not being able to portray his full vision is interesting. Of course, I have no idea how far half a billion goes with some many moving parts in a big-budget film. Definitely makes me think back to many of my favorite films with curiosity as that what the original, full vision could have been. If money was not an option of course. What do you think?
