You may need to wait until iPhone 15 in 2023 to get ProMotion on non-Pro models

Apple’s iPhone 15 update coming in 2023 has been predicted to bring ProMotion, Apple’s dynamic refresh rate display technology, across all models—including non-Pro ones.

  • ProMotion may remain exclusive to the Pro-branded iPhone 14 models
  • All iPhone models may get ProMotion displays “maybe in 2023”
  • ProMotion support is currently limited to the iPhone 13 Pro models

iPhone 15 to bring ProMotion to all models?

Responding to a question, analyst Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants wrote on his Twitter that ProMotion will remain an exclusive feature to Pro-branded models of this year’s upcoming iPhone 14 family. For the addition of ProMotion across all models, people will need to wait until 2023 when he expects ProMotion to expand to the entire iPhone 15 lineup. MacRumors has more:

Young suggests that Chinese manufacturer BOE would be the supplier of LTPO OLED displays for lower-end ‌iPhone 14‌ models, but he said the company does not have enough production capacity to do so right now. Samsung is currently the exclusive supplier of LTPO OLED displays for ‌iPhone 13 Pro‌ models, while a report last year claimed that LG would also start making LTPO OLED displays in hopes of supplying them to Apple this year.

Just three days ago, a research note from Haitong International Securities said Apple was going to adopt the 120Hz ProMotion display feature across the entire iPhone 14 lineup. That would include the four different models we’re expecting. Instead of an iPhone mini, however, we expect Apple to launch a pair of iPhone 14 models with 6.1-inch displays, and two additional handsets with 6.7-inch screens. Whether ProMotion expands to non-Pro models in 2022 or 2023, everyone will benefit from not having to worry about whether their iPhone has a variable refresh rate display or not.

How ProMotion works?

ProMotion is a marketing term Apple coined for its dynamic refresh rate display technology. With it, users get an adaptive display refresh rate up to 120Hz which adjusts automatically based on content. So if you’re watching a film, for example, the refresh rate may drop all the way down to 24 frames per second. Typical interactions in apps will happen at 60Hz, just like before ProMotion.

But interactions with lots of moving or changing content, like fast-scrolling a webpage in Safari, editing a video or playing an intensive action game, may boost the refresh rate all the way up to 120Hz, or twice the rate of typical LCD displays, for smooth motion.

ProMotion was easily one of the more oft-requested features for the iPhone lineup for quite some time. The technology debuted on a 2018 redesign to the iPad Pro lineup. ProMotion expanded to the iPhone with the iPhone 13 release and is also featured on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon.
