Bright Eyes have shared their cover of “Running Back” by Thin Lizzy, recorded for Secretly Canadian‘s 25th-anniversary charity campaign. The Conor Oberst-led trio first recorded the Jailbreak track in 2020 for Secretly Canadian’s SC25 Singles series.

Available now across platforms, “Running Back” hears Bright Eyes play the cover straight from the hip. The jangly keys from the Irish rocker’s original 1976 version open the indie emo-folk pioneer’s rendition just the same. Rather than giving it any of the familiar Bright Eyes sadboi touch, the band stays true to the original with Oberst even pulling off a fair Phil Lynott impression.

Secretly Canadian celebrated its 25th-anniversary last year, launching the SC25 Series to raise money for New Hope for Families. The 501(c)(3) non-profit provides solutions for homeless children and families in Bloomington, IN. The Indiana record label has extended its campaign into the new year, hoping to raise $250,000 for New Hope.

Ever since returning in August 2020 with Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was—Bright Eyes’ first new album in nearly a decade—the band has been on a charitable kick. In October of that year, Oberst joined up with his one-time protege Phoebe Bridgers along with Flea and Jon Theodore (Queens Of The Stone Age) for “Miracle Of Life“, a single benefiting Planned Parenthood. In February 2021, Bright Eyes also released a cover of Vic Chesnutt‘s “Flirted With You All My Life“.
