LSU defensive analyst moves on from Brian Kelly's staff

LSU defensive analyst Gerald Chatman is leaving Baton Rouge, but he won’t be going very far. Chatman is now the new defensive line coach at Tulane, according to Bruce Feldman.

Gerald Chatman spent two seasons with the Tigers as an analyst, assisting with the defensive line. Although it initially appeared as though he would stay with Brian Kelly and his first staff at LSU, he’s instead taking a promotion with the Green Wave.

Prior to his time at LSU, Chatman coached with the Cincinnati Bengals. He worked first with the Bengals as a coaching intern in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship program. He was also an intern with the Denver Broncos (2016) and Green Bay Packers (2015).

Chatman spent 2017-18 at Tennessee State University, where he worked as defensive ends/linebackers coach in 2017. He added duties as special teams coordinator for the 2018 season. Prior to Tennessee State, Chatman was a graduate assistant at Texas A&M.

The new Tulane assistant started his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He was a defensive lineman at Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 2006-10.

Kelly expected to add former Michigan offensive line coach

Terry Malone is expected to join LSU’s coaching staff as an analyst for the upcoming 2022 season. The news was first reported by WTOL 11’s Jordan Strack and later confirmed by The Athletic’s Brody Miller.

Malone just finished up his third season as Bowling Green’s offensive coordinator. The Falcons finished 4-8 on the year with the offense averaging 317.2 yard per game.

The veteran coach will bring LSU over 30 years of coaching experience. Malone’s resume also includes National Championship and Super Bowl victories.

He was a member of Michigan’s 1997 National Championship team. He also won five Big Ten championships with the Wolverines from 1997-2005. His coaching success continued directly after, joining Sean Payton’s New Orleans Saints staff as tight ends coach from 2006-2014. He helped coach the Saints to their first and only Super Bowl victory in 2010.
