When the winds of adversity blow across our lives, when the fury of the enemy lashes out like a tempest around us, and above all, when the wrath of God seems to sweep down on us because of our transgressions, there is a fortress we can run to and His name is Jesus.
What is a fortress? It is a place of protection. That is what Christ is. When the weight of the world is pressing down upon us; when we feel like we can’t put one step in front of the other, there is one refuge only to which we can flee - Christ!
In the time of natural grief and trouble, Christ lets us find a refuge in Him; when our enemies threaten, He “hides us in the secret of His presence from the pride of man,” and “keeps us secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues,” according to Psalm 31:20 (KJV).
When we shrink from the thought of God’s wrath, Christ offers Himself to us as our shelter. He hides us away from wind and storm, and tempest and evil of all kinds, but He is Himself our protection, our buckler and high tower, our shield. Isaiah says in Chapter 4:5-6 (KJV), “...the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defense. And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat and for a place of refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain.” Christ is that tabernacle. His merits cover up our sins and make atonement for them. He shelters us from the wrath of God by His precious blood’s atoning. Christ truly is our fortress.
