Warning: This post contains spoilers from Yellowjackets‘ Season 1 finale.
It looks like the mystery of “Who the heck were those people who kidnapped Natalie?” on Yellowjackets will be solved within the calendar year.
A Showtime executive recently told Vulture that the survival drama — which was renewed for Season 2 in December — likely would return before 2023.
“We are working towards a premiere at the end of 2022,” Showtime Networks president of entertainment Gary Levine said, adding that the series ideally would stay on an “annual cycle. I think our audiences deserve that, and I also think that when you have a show that has this kind of a momentum, you don’t want to let it dissolve.”
The drama about a high school girls’ soccer team involved in a plane crash in the 1990s has been one of social media’s hottest topics since late December, thanks in part to its stacked cast (including Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress) and its suck-you-in central mystery. The Season 1 finale, which aired Sunday, revealed how team captain Jackie, played by Ella Purnell, died. (Read our recap and get more answers from our post-episode conversation with series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.)
Levine also mused that, given its character dynamics, Yellowjackets might go well beyond Season 2. “This is not reliant upon, ‘What’s the answer to the secret?,” he said. “This has many secrets, many surprises, and a real human dimension that has longevity built into it.”
Are you glad Yellowjackets will be back sooner than expected? Sound off in the comments!
Yes! I was afraid it would be 2 or 3 years given the trend in tv these days. Would be great to do several seasons back to back but that’s probably unlikely given the cast’s schedules.
So did I! Glad to hear it won’t follow that trend of Covid times. The Ryan guy must live in the 1990s lol.
Not exactly 1990s. Lucifer had less than 6 months between seasons. It’s definitely possible to air a show within a year.
Loved the show and looked forward to see it each week!!! It’s so intense and the actors are great!! Thanks for doing a second season–I’m so happy🥰
A year after it premiered isnt that surprising.
It is when shows are off the air for 2+ years between seasons.
Yasss!🙌🙌🙌🙌 This show is a TRIP……. thank the tv gods we don’t have to wait long.
Unless it’s before December 2022, it’s not really earlier than expected. This Season started in December 2021 and ended in January 2022. Plus December 2022 still counts as this year.
To me earlier than expected would be Summer or Fall 2022. But I also want the showrunners to have enough time to ensure a good season 2 and beyond, so I would rather them take as much time as they need instead of making a sub-par Season 2 and then Showtime cancels it.
I expected/feared 2 years at the earliest.
Yea, I feel like maybe some people are being very literal.
Given many shows have had extensive timing challenges to film – like, The Boys – and get back on the air given the pandemic, it IS great news that they are going to be staying on a cycle.
It premiered on Nov 14, 2021.
I agree though that if it isn’t before Nov 2022 then it’s not earlier than expected.
Earlier then expected would be say in June or July as you said.
I got say I said to my daughter Laddy definitely is still alive and has something to do with Travis death. Honestly I think these girls form some kind of lottery to see who stays alive and who dies. I cantwait for season 2.
Sooner than expected? An entire year to wait for season 2 Yellowjackets? Too long for any series to continue. Ridiculous!
In the comments on the last article, we were suggesting who should play the older Lottie (if she appears).
I suggested Jordana Brewster, others suggested Catalina Sandino Moreno (I think that’s an even better choice) and Katie Holmes.
Any other suggestions?
Angie Harmon
But I would like to see someone a little less known so the audience can be fully frightened by her adult self.
The actress who plays young Lottie is part Chinese and part New Zealand Maori. I would think any adult actress cast would also be mixed race.
Yeah I’ve been thinking the same thing. It would be great to go with another 90’s teen star but the 90’s sadly were not exactly rife with AAPI actors. If they ignore race (which doesn’t seem right), I would throw in Fairuza Balk for some crazy fun.
Omg yes! But she would have been good Natalie, I’m not so sure about Lottie or anyone else.
Great show. So glad it will be back soon. So many shows were delayed due to covid and other so called reasons. I’ve given up on Better Call Saul, Stranger Things, Get Shorty and others. Especially when you have teens in the cast, got to film back to back bc they change so much in looks.
Better Call Saul was delayed several weeks because Bob Odenkirk had a heart attack. I wouldn’t call COVID-19 a “so called reason.”
I know this is pretty quick, but it’s still a whole year before I know what’s going on. I’ve been waiting on Animal Kingdom and Killing Eve for so long that I almost forgot they existed.
I’m still blown away by Yellowjackets finale. It was NOT what I expected. It blew my mind. Then I watched Britannia and took it over the top. I was up all night trying to process and come down.
To be honest, it was a little anticlimactic, I for sure thought that Jackie’s death would be caused by the hand of one of the girls, even accidentally, but her dying by freezing to death in the snow? Meh. Idk I was still surprised but not exactly happy about it. Still a great freaking show & cast.
I think they had her die that way to serve as a tipping-off point for how/why things escalate. They weren’t at the point yet where they were starving enough to (soberly) kill one of their friends. But, they now have a dead friend who has literally frozen to death as winter sets in, and I’m assuming that her preserved body is going to be where they turn as they realize there is no food to be found easily anymore in a wilderness winter, with few/no berries & plants to be found & most animals hibernating at least to some extent. And once they take things that far, realize they are capable of something that horrible, and run out nutrition from Jackie (ahh!), what is their next option? Or who? Very similar start to the Chile crash, and realistic. Not sure where they’re going with the supernatural-ish aspect of this, and hope they don’t make that too absurd, but it could be smartly done. Hopefully!
OMGAWDDDDDDDD best show everrrrr!!!
PLEASE have a quick return. It’s a great story with wonderful performers. Nothing worse than being invested but because it takes so long to get back to the story, one loses interest.
A premiere in December 2022 would probably mean a spring or summer start for filming, late summer at the latest.
Given that the 1996 portion of the second season will likely play during the winter, it might be a challenge to get the necessary seasonal environment, provided that filming takes place at the same location. Of course, it can be faked, but I don’t know how expensive that would turn out to be, and how realistic it would look.
Ok here’s something smart. For the most
part, these are all smart, tough, rational girls, under normal circumstances. Why would they ever follow Lottie as a leader?? If that is where this show is heading I will lose interest quickly. Lottie would be liability, they can’t count on her to keep their secrets of what they did because she’s unstable. It would make no sense for them to begin to follow her after she led them to almost kill Travis. I am hooked love the show, but if they stretch it into these girls not addressing the obvious, follow lottie and her visions and not address the fact that she’s dangerous, then the show will make no sense at all. I know they’re starving but we all know what they do, they don’t need to follow Lottie to do that, give offerings and what not. They’re just surviving. From the beginning I thought Lottie was the sacrifice, in the pit. She was the last and only one they killed because they would have to, she cannot be let back into the real world. I won’t watch if she’s their leader…… Shauna should’ve got chewed out at least by a few other girls for what she did and told to be quiet, I don’t like the fact that they are condoning what she did to Jackie just because Jackie was universally loved and didn’t pay enough attention to shauna, u bang your best friend’s man, and get pregnant by him, u just sit there and shut up, u take whatever Jackie has to say to u shauna, that was a mistake to let it play out like that. Shauna still woulda had plenty of regret to live with , I love how honest they all are with each other but the last episode just didn’t do anything right….. not like the other episodes where issues are addressed, they just pretended like let’s just sit here and eat and not talk like we normally do I didn’t understand why things weren’t addressed
I had to start the show over & I agree I thought lottie was the one in the pit. Although they did rely on her for alot before it WAS her dad that rented the plane for them after all. And I would imagine he’s provided many other things for them. I assume we’ll get more of a backstory on her in season 2 but until then we have to wait.
They don’t know that Lottie was on antipsychotics & has been going through dangerous withdrawals & is off her meds now. And they all went crazy and went after Travis because of the mushrooms, so they probably didn’t realize that she was on a different level of seriousness with that situation. I think thus far they just think she’s a bit superstitious & a little paranoid & says things here & there that I think they’re relating to her heritage & beliefs, so they’re not understanding the danger she presents yet. The longer she’s off her meds, the more intense she’s going to get, and I’m sure at least some of them will start to be weary of her, but there’s obviously some sort of supernatural aspect happening in that wilderness, something Taisa is still dealing with as an adult, and that obviously is going to become a more important part of the story, so some of the girls might actually find comfort in Lottie because she APPEARS to have some sense of what’s going on, some sort of connection, and very well could be all in her head, or it could be partly in her head & partly real…we don’t know yet. But I can see Lottie rising to a leadership role, and then as things turn even darker, I can see her being the catalyst for a split among the group, and them maybe turning on each other. Idk. We’ll have to wait & see, but I’m looking forward to it. This was one of the most original seasons of television we’ve seen in a good while. Solid start.
Oh, also, LOL thinking that any of the other girls would be caring about the drama with Jackie & Scheana when they’re about to starve to death, that’s just silly. What they ARE pissed about is the fact that Jackie has done nothing but complain and resist being proactive or helpful at all in helping them freaking SURVIVE. She doesn’t want to help with anything, while they’ve all been actively trying to find & hunt food, make necessities out of their clothing, making weapons to hunt, killing the animals and separating the meat, cooking, etc. It’s no surprise at all that they turned on her.
Yes !!! The sooner the better. Love this show
Love love love this show and can not wait for its return.
Yes I loved this series. Can hardly wait!!!!!
Best show ive seen in such a long time. Usually tv shows will bore you with a few episodes here and there but not Yellowjackets. Every episode was 10/10 for me. My only disappointment is now i have no other shows not even nearly as interesting as this show is to watch. I know season 2 will be amazing just please dont take forever to release it. Im going to have to put all my friends on this show just so i can re watch it again several times lol.
I love the yellow jackets series! Yes, I can’t wait to pick up where we left off!!
My question: why did they feel it necessary to make one of their FEW black main characters amoral & hyper-violent from episode 1? Of course, I mean Taissa the TYPICAL AMERICAN STEREOTYPES of the amoral, hyper-violent black lesbian (whom Americans love pretending are less than human AND less than women) w/ the demonic black child (that Americans love charging as adults.) I guess American media is bound and determined to portray 14% of the black American population as gay or lecture about them being “homophobic” everytime they’re on tv. I barely see black female characters on tv now w/out them being lesbians. It’s feels like a twofold message for black women to stop having black children w/ black men AND to check off all the “minority” boxes in one: 1. Black 2. Female. 3. Gay. Just stop it. And I guess the show writers thought it was cool to portray one of their FEW black main characters as a hyper-violent, evil criminal from the first episode by having her break an “innocent white female victim’s” leg over a freaking soccer team in the 1990’s. A black girl risking her future over a soccer team *in the 1990’s* & trusting the REST of the white females on that team not to IMMEDIATELY turn on her and tell the principal & the police!? I’ve never seen or heard something so absurd in my life. I guess they thought they could get away w/ portraying a black person as a mindless violent criminal JUST b/c she’s black FEMALE & they somehow thought that would be “empowering” but feminism is supposed to be INTERSECTIONAL. Black females have distinct anti-black misogynistic stereotypes they’ve been fighting for HUNDREDS of years, like the “Strong Black Woman” stereotype that has lead to black females being overworked, overburdened like mules to the pound of dying young from hypertension & stress, being physically manhandled by men, society failing to provide basic normal protections they would for any other female. This show just REAFFIRMED that stereotype by pretending that black women have the SAME gender stereotype issues white women have had about being thought of as weak, delicate, & needing to be protected. This is a racist culture and country. If they kept THAT in mind & consulted w/ somebody, they wouldn’t have made Taissa into TYPICAL racist stereotype of the “evil-for-no reason, violent, black monster.”🙄 Maybe they could rethink her character next season or add some more black characters to add some nuance. B/c she and her demon child cannot be the only ones.
I agree w/your point that they often try to roll all underrepresented characters into one and so you often end up with a gay WOC. If there were one other main character that was black or of color, it would help balance that. But as far as evil goes, Misty is far more evil than her!
Besides Nat, the rest of the core four are pretty evil.
Honestly just happy I don’t have to hear about antler queen and adult Jackie speculation anymore
Me and my husband started to watch Yellojackets
My husband and I love this show. I can’t wait to watch the second season.
I Love this show!!! I can’t wait for the 2nd season to start.
