Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke to the media after the team’s Wild Card round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Dallas Cowboys know this feeling all too well. The playoffs have become a short weekend stay for the NFC East team, no matter how good the team has done throughout the regular season. But this latest exit could be the most painful the team has suffered in quite some time.

On the second day of Super Wild Card weekend, the Cowboys lost 23-17 to the San Francisco 49ers in heartbreaking fashion. With a chance to win the game, the Cowboys just missed out on spiking the football prior to the game clock expiring.

After the game, team owner Jerry Jones met with the media, calling the latest loss “extremely, extremely disappointing.” Not only that, but he gave the blunt assessment that the 49ers “outplayed” the Cowboys.

The 49ers dominated the majority of the game, but Dallas got back into it after a fourth quarter interception thrown by Jimmy Garoppolo led to Dak Prescott scoring a rushing touchdown to cut their deficit 23-17. Dallas had a shot at potentially winning the game after Deebo Samuel fell just short of the first down marker on third down, and a quarterback sneak by Garoppolo was negated by a false start penalty, forcing the 49ers to punt.

With less than a minute remaining, the Cowboys marched down the field hoping to get into the end zone to win the game. Prescott then ran up the middle to set Dallas up near the red zone. The issue was, they had no timeouts left, leaving them scrambling to the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately, Prescott had to wait on the official to touch the ball before spiking it. Once that happened, Prescott clocked the football, when the game clock hit triple zeroes.

This game will stick with Jones for quite some time. If anything, this was one of the more complete teams Dallas has had in recent memory, and it was still not enough to get out of the Wild Card round. Jones even admitted that having “this combination of players together, you need to have success.”

It will be interesting to see what Jones opts to do this offseason to help his team reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995.
