Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys were brimming with confidence ahead of their Wild Card skirmish with the San Francisco 49ers. They were primed for a deep run in the NFL Playoffs, which would be a fitting story for Prescott's return from injury.

But alas, everything would have to wait.

The Cowboys lost a tough one to the 49ers on Sunday night, 23-17. Prescott and company tried to stay alive with a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, but the 49ers, led by Deebo Samuel, built enough cushion to salvage the victory and advance to the next stage.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was gracious in defeat, saluting the 49ers for employing a solid strategy (via Michael Gehlken of Dallas Morning News).

“Give San Francisco credit. They overcame some things over the course of the game. We were herky-jerky.”

The Cowboys had a last-gasp chance to steal the victory with a little over 30 seconds remaining. But the clock ran out before their final play, allowing the 49ers to escape with the win and earn the right to face the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round.

Prescott, who dropped his third postseason stint, threw 23-of-43 for 254 yards. He, however, had a hard time connecting with Ezekiel Elliot. The two-time rushing champion finished with only 31 yards on 12 carries.

It will be another long offseason for the Cowboys.
