With snow falling into Monday morning's commute, plow drivers and commuters are trying to get ahead of the storm. Bibens ace hardware in Essex, welcoming shoppers ahead of Sunday night’s snowstorm. “The ice salt, we got a bit more than that. but it’s the special stuff like the calcium chloride, we might run out of that,” says Rovert Larivee, Key Holder at Ace Hardware in Essex. Key Holder Rick Larivee is helping people in a last-minute hurry to grab essentials before the snow comes.“It’s like anything else. It's like snow tires. Do it early. Do it early before they’re gone. It has nothing to do with price, price is going to stay the same, get your preparations and get them early before they’re gone,” Larivee said. VTrans said they’ve been preparing for the storm since last week as they also deal with a staffing shortage.“We started the season with some vacancies and COVID-19 has really stressed some of the availability of our employees,” says Todd Law, deputy manager of District Maintenance and Fleet Division. After reaching out to different volunteers and fleet maintenance staff, VTrans is ready to do storm clean-up, especially during mid-day hours when the snow may turn into sleet. “We ask that everybody provide additional time to get there. Don’t make any drastic movements. No heavy braking or steering and don’t crowd the plow,” Law said. The Village of Essex Junction says clearing the sidewalks is just as important as clearing the roads, so people can get around safely.“We’ve got two sidewalk machines to go out and we plow almost, 35 miles of sidewalk. We are a pedestrian-friendly environment,” says Rick Jones, public works superintendent Village of Essex Junction.
