Comedy Central has confirmed the premiere date of the newest season of the animated comedy series South Park.

On Friday, the network announced that the 25th season of South Park would be premiering on February 2.

The show hasn't aired regular episodes since 2019, having instead created pandemic-themed specials for Comedy Central and Paramount+ in September 2020 and March 2021 respectively.

The 25th season will mark a return to regular stand-alone episodes for the long-running show.

Co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker said: "To be halfway done with South Park is a great accomplishment – we can't lie."

Though not confirmed, their statement suggests that fans are in for many more seasons, possibly all the way up until season 50.

At the moment, the show has been renewed through to season 30 at Comedy Central, with 14 original movies based on the show having been ordered at Paramount+.

This is part of a six-year deal signed between the creators and ViacomCBS's MTV Entertainment Studios. It is said to be worth $900 million.

Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Network and MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement: "For the past 25 years, multiple generations of fans have grown up enchanted by the outlandishly funny and subversive world that Matt and Trey have created with South Park."

"As part of our expansive new deal, we are thrilled to continue our partnership with them for many more seasons of South Park on Comedy Central and many more made-for-streaming South Park exclusive events on Paramount+."

The first two of those exclusive events streamed in November and December 2021.

South Park premiered on Comedy Central 14 years ago in 1997, and has had a dedicated fan-base since then, paving the road for the numerous South Park-related content in the years ahead.

South Park airs on Comedy Central. It's also available via streaming services including Amazon Prime Video and NOW in the UK, with selected episodes on Netflix. In the US, it's also available on HBO Max.
