Daniil Medvedev new Australian Open favorite

Daniil Medvedev of Russia returns to Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria during their round four match of the BNP Paribas Open, Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, in Indian Wells, Calif.

Daniil Medvedev is the new favorite in the men’s draw entering the Australian Open with top-ranked Novak Djokovic out of the event.

Medvedev won his first career Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open last year while also ending Djokovic’s quest to win the calendar Grand Slam.

Medvedev won only nine games in losing last year’s final to Djokovic in straight sets in Melbourne. However, he is the +145 favorite at FanDuel and +160 favorite at PointsBet with the Serbian out of his way before this year’s event even begins after having his visa revoked for the second time and losing his appeal Sunday.

Alexander Zverev, who beat Medvedev to win last year’s ATP Finals, is the third seed and second betting favorite at +270 and +275, respectively.

Stefanos Tsitsipas also received a break with Djokovic being replaced by a “lucky loser” in the draw. As the No. 4 seed, he avoids a potential semifinal showdown with Djokovic. However, he remains a +1600 longshot at FanDuel and +1200 at PointsBet.

That’s well behind No. 6 seed Rafael Nadal at +750 and +550, respectively. The sixth-seeded Spaniard is tied with Djokovic and Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam victories all-time at 20, but is the only one of the three who will begin the tournament as Federer continues to recover from knee surgery.

First up for Nadal in the draw will be American Marcos Giron.

Fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev has the fifth-shortest odds at PointsBet at +1400. However, he’s +3800 at FanDuel, behind Jannik Sinner (+1800) and Matteo Berrettini (+2100)
