Dortmund, Bayern cruise to Matchday 19 wins

The top two sides in the Bundesliga continue their winning ways

Matchday 19 In the Bundesliga provided fans with several key games. With less than half the season left to be played every game will be important to some degree.

Borussia Dortmund 5-1 Freiburg

On Friday, the battle between second place Borussia Dortmund and fourth place Freiburg looked like it would be a competitive match based on the standings in the table.

But it was far from it.

Right back Thomas Meunier scored a pair of goals (in the 14th and 29th minutes) to give the lads in black and yellow a hot start.

Ending his goal scoring drought of two games, the Norwegian sensation Erling Braut Haaland netted twice, both executed perfectly with his trademark finesse, the first in the final moments of the first half and the second in the 75th minute.

Mahmoud Dahoud capped off the game in the 86th minute as Dortmund crushed Freiburg 5-1, giving Borussia Dortmund their 13th win of the campaign.

Koln 0-4 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich’s away match in Cologne looked like to be a tricky matchup for the Bundesliga leaders.

The latest reports regarding the health of Canada international Alphonso Davies (sidelined with myocarditis) were coupled with the absences of Lucas Hernandez, Leon Goretzka and Kingsley Coman.

The German champions were not fazed at all and they dominated yet another match, winning easily 4-0. The victory kept the gap between Bayern Munich and second place Borussia Dortmund at 6 points.

Lewandowski put on another legendary performance, netting a hat trick with goals scored in the 9th, 62nd and 74th minute. Lewandowski also recorded his 300th career goal in the Bundesliga and ,at age 33, he’s not showing any signs of slowing down.

Union Berlin 2-1 Hoffenheim

Union Berlin’s 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim was a huge stepping stone for the 2019-20 Bundesliga promoted club.

The win has them not only level with Hoffenheim, but they are flirting with a UEFA Champions League spot. Yes, much of the season still has to be played but Union Berlin are in great form now with only two losses in their last seven games.

Things started off poorly for Union Berlin with an own goal committed by Timo Baumgartl in the 16th minute. Six minutes later, Union Berlin printed its name on the scoresheet courtesy of Andreas Voglsammer who scored with a header into the left corner of the net. Another headed goal, this time by Grischa Promel, in the 73rd minute gave Union Berlin the lead and, ultimately, the win.

The rest of  the Bundesliga score lines had Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin in a scoreless draw, RB Leipzig winning 2-0 over Stuttgart, Mainz topping Bochum 1-0 and Bayer Leverkusen earning a tough away win, 2-1 at Borussia Monchengladbach. Sunday’s games saw two draws: Augsburg 1, Eintracht Frankfurt 1, and in a relegation battle, Arminia and Furth tied 2-2.
