Where's the justice for Jan. 6?

Palm Beach Post
FILE - In this Jan. 6, 2021 file photo, violent insurrectionists loyal to President Donald Trump scale the west wall of the the U.S. Capitol in Washington. In the nearly nine months since Jan. 6, federal agents have managed to track down and arrest more than 600 people across the U.S. believed to have joined in the riot at the Capitol. Getting those cases swiftly to trial is turning out to be an even more difficult task. (AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana, File)

On Dec. 7, 1941, an attack against our country was celebrated in Japan as a military success. Property was destroyed and Americans died. America retaliated, hunted down and killed or imprisoned the leaders. Sept. 11, 2001, an attack against our economy, was celebrated in the Islamic world as people danced in the streets and Osama Bin-Laden watched it on television. Property was destroyed and Americans died. America retaliated, hunted down and killed or imprisoned the leaders.

Jan. 6, 2021, an attack against our government, was, and is, celebrated by Trump supporters as an attack against a “stolen” election. Trump watched it all on television. Property was destroyed and Americans died. America retaliated by hunting down the participants, sentencing most to a few days in jail and allowing the leaders to praise the “patriots'” lie about the assault and plan for the stealing the next election. As Pogo said in a 1971 comic strip: “We have met the enemy and he Is us.”

GOP puts party over principles

On Jan. 6, I revisited scenes from the insurrection at the United States Capitol by supporters of the former president. I also viewed the past and present actions of Republican officials, not just in Congress, but in all levels of government. I am reminded of a quote by Winston Churchill: "Some men change their party for the sake of their principles; others their principles for the sake of their party." I will add, "and themselves." Shame on them.

Hateful politics has its consequences

I am a U.S. Army veteran and I am married to an African-American woman whom I feel for more and more each day. What our former president instilled in his "loyal followers," was that it was OK to hate, do everything possible to suppress black votes, undermine the Constitution and tell them to "fight like hell," even though it meant they'd be breaking the law. Those Americans who are getting convicted and some doing jail time, did "your president" come running to your bail hearing to help you out? No, of course not. What does it say about you?

Jan. 6 panel's work still crucial

The latest catch words the Republicans are using to downplay the Jan. 6 committee and its work are that they, the GOP, want to look forward while the committee is stuck on the past. The hypocrisy of this position is overwhelming. How many times when the GOP controlled the House did they investigate Bengazi? The incident was tragic but no one's fault. Its importance pales in comparison to that of the insurrection against our democratically elected government, We need to remember this when election time rolls around — if we still have elections.
