Last year saw another surge – this one in violent crime. The number of murders in Los Angeles reached a 15-year high in 2021. Three-hundred-ninety-seven people were killed, which is 42 more than in 2020. This also broke the city’s 12-year streak of decreasing homicide totals. The LAPD says most of the murders were the product of personal or gang-related disputes. Eighty-eight homeless people were killed last year as well, up by 22 from 2020. Overall violent crime increased about 4-percent.
