One of the key features that were added to the all-electric BMW i4 was the acclaimed curved screen that houses the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. It looks like we could soon see this iDrive 8 unit make its way to the BMW M3 and M4 when the duo are treated to their mid-cycle update.

According to information sourced by BMW Blog, it was only a matter of time until this piece of equipment filtered through into the brand's traditional models. Given that this is the brand's latest piece of information technology, it's logical to want to implement it throughout the range as soon as possible.

While the unit will be fitted across the BMW 3 and 4 Series range, it's understood that the M variants could be treated to a collection of unique M-style graphics as opposed to the futuristic and electrified designs found in the i4's unit. It is also noted that this should come as no surprise seeing that BMW usually implements a new iDrive system, if available, into facelifted models. This time, however, the change includes a full hardware transition from the current flat screen panel.

Those currently using the current Operating System 7.0 interface will be subjected to somewhat of a steeper learning curve if they decide to opt for a new product with the updated unit. The new interface is rather different from the current one as it adopts a more Android-like operating system with app libraries. This is something that initial users could find frustrating. Furthermore, the new unit means that analog inputs such as the climate controls will be swapped-out with new digital ones integrated with the screen.

Thankfully for those who don't prefer too much change, the rotary controller will remain for ideal ergonomics while the unit's voice, touch, and gesture controls are significantly enhanced. With this new system, BMW is intent on the driver and car having a more natural dialogue. It has achieved this by applying a series of digital, intelligent, and proactive functions.

Via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, iDrive 8 can adjust to the driver's needs and routines thanks to a central operating channel of human-machine interaction. Via the My Modes feature, users can enjoy a variety of functions that aim to create special moments from a combination of vehicle characteristics. We look forward to seeing how this feature is incorporated into the brand's future performance lineup.
