Like many other idealistic weekend warriors, I spent most of my teens and twenties dreaming of selling all my worldly belongings and moving into a van down by the river. But then I got my wish.

In 2020, when our work went remote, my partner and I broke the lease on our Brooklyn shoebox and moved into an equally spacious Ram Promaster, with the vague goal spending the next few years roaming the west and chasing squirrels with our dog.

The problem? The van was expensive, so we had to do without certain luxuries, including, unfortunately, a heater. This didn’t seem like much of a problem when we were building the van out in the summer. But then (wham!) it was November in Montana. As temperatures fell below freezing, then below zero, my partner and I (and the dog) spent our workdays shivering in bed, blowing into our fingers as we typed on frozen laptops, brewing pot after pot of tea because—carbon monoxide be damned—our propane stove was our only source of heat.

The only thing that made working (or sleeping) in the van even remotely tolerable was our Rumpl Original Puffy Throw blanket.

The Rumpl is a lightweight puffy blanket (2.1 pounds) that packs up into a small stuff sack (approximately 6.5 by 14 inches). Basically it’s a sleeping bag—minus the bag part. The throw size is great for either supplementing your existing bedding (as we did in the van) or draping over your shoulders while you work (as we also did in the van). Because it’s made of “100% recycled 30D ripstop polyester fabric,” it is odor and stain resistant. And because it’s made of synthetic down (i.e. “100% recycled 3D hollow fiber siliconized synthetic insulation”), it can be washed and dried in conventional washing machine and driers.

The only problem with the Rumpl? Thanks to it, we could never quite justify getting that heater. So we gave up and moved out of the van.
