Realignment likely for county commission districts

Moving Lake Waukomis to district one is proposed

Redistricting is in the works for the geographical areas represented by the Platte County Commission, officials have said.

The Platte County Commission is considering adjusting the boundaries of the north and south districts to more closely match the population numbers as shown in the 2020 census.

Currently district two (basically the northern part of the county) contains 2,276 more people than district one (the southern district), says Joe Vanover, current second district commissioner.

“We have discussed redistricting several times in the last few months. Recently county staff completed their analysis of the census numbers. Redistricting will be on the county commission administrative agenda on Jan.18,” Vanover said Monday.

Vanover said he proposes moving Lake Waukomis from the north district (district two) to the south district (district one).

He said if the proposal is accepted, the population difference between the two districts would be narrowed to 500.

“Moving Lake Waukomis to district one would also preserve the general north-south split,” Vanover remarked.

“I have notified the Republican Central Committee, the Democratic Central Committee and the Lake Waukomis Board of Aldermen of the proposed change. If the public would like to comment on the proposed change, they can email joe.vanover@co.platte.mo.us or they can attend the Jan. 18 county commission meeting,” Vanover said.
