Knicks, Mavs Among Potential Dennis Schroder Trade Destinations

Dennis Schroder, Boston Celtics, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

The Boston Celtics are a team that no one can figure out this NBA season. One night they look like they can be contenders, beating teams with ease. The next, they come out flat, getting blown out and looking like a team destined for a spot in the lottery.

Their effort and execution have been so erratic, they can sometimes have swings like that from quarter to quarter. Just look at the game last week against the New York Knicks when they led by as many as 25 points and couldn’t hold on for the win.

Heading into the deadline, the Celtics are a team that could make some moves. There is only one thing for sure when it comes to them; they are looking to build the roster up around Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, not break that pairing up.

It makes sense to not pull the plug yet. There are some overlapping skills between the two, but a team is going to do all they can with two young All-Stars before breaking things up.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Celtics’ Dennis Schroder To Be Moved At NBA Trade Deadline?

One player that could be on the move in the coming weeks is point guard Dennis Schroder. Schroder signed a one-year, $5.9 million deal with the Celtics after turning down a four-year extension from the Los Angeles Lakers during last season that was worth north of $80 million.

It was a bad misjudgment of his market, as Dennis Schroder was met with crickets in free agency. But, he is someone that should be able to at least double his annual salary this upcoming offseason. That is as big of a reason as any that the Celtics could look to trade Schroder according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.

There’s a strong possibility Dennis Schroder is traded ahead of the deadline. Boston is expected to avoid the tax and therefore likely won’t be able to afford the point guard this offseason, which was also why the Celtics moved Daniel Theis to the Bulls last season. New York, Cleveland and Dallas have been mentioned as potential destinations for Schroder.

The New York Knicks made a trade already, acquiring Cam Reddish from the Atlanta Hawks. They likely aren’t done making moves, as they now have a logjam on the wing with Evan Fournier and Alec Burks already in place and Reddish joining.

But, the point guard spot remains a long-term need for New York. Alas, it is hard to imagine them acquiring Schroder and handing him a lucrative deal, knowing they are going to be working out extensions for Reddish and RJ Barrett ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers need help in the backcourt as they have lost Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio to season-ending injuries. They acquired Rajon Rondo from the Los Angeles Lakers but could use more help.

The Dallas Mavericks have been looking for a secondary ball-handler to pair with Luka Doncic for months. Jalen Brunson has moved into the starting lineup alongside him, but that leaves the second unit shorthanded. Dennis Schroder would fit the bill as a secondary ball-handler and help bolster a backcourt that could use a little more depth.
